What Is a Capacitor

A capacitor is a passive electronic component that stores energy in the form of an electric field. It consists of two conductive plates separated by an insulating material called a dielectric. When voltage is applied across the plates, electrical charge accumulates positive on one plate, negative on the other, creating a potential difference.

Unlike batteries, which store energy chemically, capacitors store energy physically and can release it almost instantly. This makes them essential in circuits that require fast energy delivery or signal smoothing.

How Capacitors Work
  • Charging: When connected to a power source, electrons build up on one plate while being removed from the other. This creates an electric field across the dielectric.

  • Storage: The capacitor holds this charge until it’s needed, maintaining a voltage across its plates.

  • Discharging: When connected to a circuit, the stored energy is released, powering components or stabilizing voltage.
